EVERYONE wants a good night’s sleep.
Without it, it’s hard to function as you normally would. Lack of sleep can contribute to a low mood, affect your energy levels and your ability to concentrate.
Many of us intend to improve our sleep, but life just gets in the way. Sometimes it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day and when there’s that endless to do list, sleep doesn’t take priority.
Sound familiar?
With the New Year coming up, it’s time to stop putting off your sleep regime and put your wellbeing first.
1) Time in Bed Before You Sleep
Most people sit and watch TV or stay awake browsing the web until their chosen bedtime.
They then get straight into bed without having time to rest properly.
TIP: Go to bed half an hour early and read a book, meditate or just relax in a dimly lit bedroom. This way sleep will be more gradual and natural.
2) Essential Oils
Essential oils have proven qualities, and there are many face oils, pillow sprays and pressure point sticks that you can use to create a relaxing environment. Lavender is often a popular choice, chosen for its therapeutic properties. Chamomile is also said to have a sedative effect.
TIP: Buy some samples and see which ones you find the most soothing.
3) Prepare the Bedroom
Always ensure the bedroom is prepared before you spend the evening doing other activities. This should include a nicely-made bed, laundry cleared and ensuring the bedroom’s at your desired temperature.
TIP: For those who enjoy a cold bedroom so that they can snuggle under a cosy duvet, open the windows early in the evening and ensure the bedroom door is closed.
4) Ban Technology
This is probably the most essential aspect of having a good night’s sleep. The worst thing you can do when you get into bed is look at your emails, texts and browse the internet. Bedtime is for winding down and forgetting life’s worries. Technology will only stimulate the mind.
TIP: Leave any technology that distracts you OUT of the bedroom.
5) Fresh Bed Linen
Never underestimate the power of fresh bed linen. Not only does it create fresh, relaxing smells that will soothe your thoughts, it also feels incredible against your skin. Do this regularly and you will NEVER regret it.
TIP: You can also buy fresh scented reeds, which will make the room smell like fresh linen.
6) Have a Bath
Having a bath will soothe any aching muscles, relax you and prepare you for unwinding in bed.
TIP: Combine the bath and essential oils tips by putting a few drops of your favourite scent in the bath before bed.
A good night’s sleep should be a priority for everyone as it is a chance to switch off from the hustle and bustle of their busy lives. A good night’s sleep is essential to mental wellbeing and being able to face life with a can-do attitude.
